Main partner: Institute for plant protection, Belgrade
Partner: Biounik, Belgrade
Project: Bacteriocin based product against Erwinia amylovora, the Fire Blight Pathogen
Sector: Food and agriculture
Project budget: 428,510 EUR
IF participation: 299,957 EUR
Agrounik LLC leads the consortium which also comprises the Institute for Plant Protection and Environment and Biounik Ltd. with the goal of developing and commercializing a natural bacteriocin product for application in plant protection. Fire blight, a disease caused by Erwinia amylovora, is one of most destructive diseases which cause great losses in the agricultural production of pome fruits. Chemicals which are usually used to control this disease have a copper-based protective effect, which makes frequent sprays necessary and may cause phytotoxicity, rusting, discoloration and cracks, as well as decline in plant vigor and inhibition of other microflora. Also, antibiotics are not effective enough due to instability, phytotoxic side effects, high costs, and the development of resistant bacterial populations.
The consortium strives to develop an effective biological control agent based on natural antibiotics of bacterial origin, which will protect the plant and reduce the severity of the disease. Practical application of this product is very simple; it is non-chemical, completely natural and, as such, superior to existing products used for plant protection.
